Skin Care Routine Steps For Beginners

We all want healthy, glowing skin but there’s so many products out there it’s hard to know where to start. You want to invest your time & money into products that are right for your skin type & will help you achieve healthy skin. But where to start?

Well this blog post is here to give you the basic skin care tips you need to get the healthy glow your skin deserves.

Step 1. Cleanser

Cleanser is where your skincare journey should begin & when I say cleanser I mean cleanser, not make up wipes or soap as these kinds of products strip away at your skins barrier & can cause all kinds of sensitivity flare ups, dryness & they could even be adding to your breakouts.

I recommend using the double cleanse technique which is exactly as it sounds, you cleanse your skin twice.

For the first cleanse I recommend an oil based cleanser or cleansing balm as oil based products are amazing for removing make up, pollution & debris from the skin with ease.

For the second cleanse I recommend using a skin specific cleanser. This is a cleanser that is suited to your individual skin type whether that be normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, ageing skin & so on.

If you’re just starting to invest in your skin care routine I know it can become expensive so if for now you’re only looking to buy 1 cleanser I’d suggest a skin specific cleanser & use that for both cleanses.

Step 2. Exfoliation

Sometimes exfoliation is skipped over especially if you’re starting out with your skin care routine & you don’t really know the benefits exfoliating your skin will give you. So here are some key benefits;

  • Glowing skin - Yes cleansing removes make up, dirt & some debris but exfoliation removes any dead skin cells from your skin that are making your complexion look dull.

  • Boosts cell renewal - As we age our cells get less efficient at renewing & as a result of this we start to develop signs of ageing. Exfoliating your skin can’t turn back the clock & stop ageing that has already taken place but it can help to stop further signs of ageing by boosting your skins cell renewal process to achieve a brighter & youthful complexion.

  • Makes your other skin care products more effective - Exfoliation cleans out your pores removing any excess oil, dirt & dead skin cells meaning that the serums, creams & moisturisers you use after exfoliation will be able to penetrate deeper into your skin to deliver the best results.

There are so many different exfoliating products out there. Some are to just be used once a week & others you can use daily so depending on your time & skin type you’ll find what works best for you.

Step 3. Toner

Using a toner can help to minimise the appearance of pores, remove any residue left on the skin from make up or cleanser, soothe the skin & helps with hydration by getting your skin to absorb more of your moisturiser.

Toners can also be amazing for helping with skin concerns. For example if you have sensitivities in your skin, using a skin specific toner for sensitivity can soothe, calm & even reduce redness in your skin. The same applies for other skin concerns for example if your skin produces excess oil, use a skin specific toner for oily skin.

Step 4. Moisturiser

Moisturiser is an obvious step that I’m sure you were expecting but its also a biggy. Moisturiser gives our skin hydration, can prolong a youthful appearance , promotes cell turnover & gives skin a healthy glow.

Like with the other steps you need to find a skin specific moisturiser for your skin to get the best results.

Step 5. SPF

This is the final step in this guide & most important step of any skin care routine for any skin type. People easily dismiss SPF. They’ll say it’s winter it’s not sunny or I don’t burn so I don’t need to use it but trust me EVERYONE should be using SPF daily & heres why -

  • UVA rays cause long term damage like skin cancer & ageing.

  • 90% of visible skin ageing is caused by UV damage.

  • UVB rays cause surface damage such as sun burn.

So even when its cloudy or raining the suns rays are still causing irreversible damage to your skin. Sun damage is easy to brush off as we don’t see it until it’s too late. It’s a simple step that can offer you big protection for the future.
